The 15 biggest stadiums in the world, and where they are

The biggest stadium in the world isn't in Europe or South America, and it isn't a football ground. It's a cricket stadium in India. And of the next ten, eight are American college football stadiums, most of them in small university towns.

Here are the fifteen largest by seated capacity, with where each one is.

The biggest: Narendra Modi Stadium, India

Ahmedabad's cricket ground was rebuilt on the site of the old Motera stadium and reopened in 2021 with room for about 132,000 people, more than any other stadium on Earth. It was renamed after India's prime minister when it reopened.

The one with a question mark: Rungrado 1st of May Stadium

Pyongyang's stadium was long claimed to hold 150,000. Its listed capacity today is 113,281, which still makes it the second largest. It's used for football, athletics and North Korea's mass games.

Why America has eight of the top ten

College football draws crowds that most professional leagues can't. Michigan Stadium, known as "The Big House", has held six-figure crowds for decades. What makes this group surprising on a map is where they are: in university towns rather than big cities. Beaver Stadium holds more than twice the population of State College, the town around it.

The biggest football (soccer) stadiums

If you only count the world's most popular sport, the list starts with Rungrado, then Camp Nou in Barcelona, being rebuilt and listed at 99,354 during the work, then FNB Stadium in Soweto, Johannesburg. Egypt's new Misr Stadium comes next.

The biggest cricket grounds

Cricket has two of the top fifteen: the Narendra Modi Stadium in first place and the Melbourne Cricket Ground in eleventh. The MCG is also the home of Australian rules football's Grand Final.
